My advise with PPC is to try and avoid generalised terms as these can be expensive and the conversion ratio is poor. For example if you build garden ponds in the London area, targeting terms like pond, ponds, fish ponds is to be avoided, whereas pond construction, building a pond, ponds in London are better quality keywords are less expensive and the traffic is more target specific, good luck with the campaign

What if your competition is not implementing good quality fundamentals, should we be interested in their campaign or simply concentrate our efforts on delivering the best possible platform for visitors and search engines alike

I tend to start with fewer keywords/phases and work out. As Pete says, avoid the very generic ones unless you have deep pockets.  Tweak the campaign constantly, re-do your research regularly.

Think like any sound marketing campaign.  Who are your target audience?  What are they thinking?  When are they thinking it?  What sparks their interest.

Focus on the customer, but take the time to understand how the search engines work.  PPC is not just about the highest bidder.
