Why do Web Designers let Clients Down?

It is estimated that over 5,000 websites are developed on a daily basis, a high percentage of these sites will be owned by people undertaking their first online project. The difficult decision for any prospective owner is how to go about choosing the right web designer. This decision is compounded by the amount of designers offering ultra-low cost web design packages. To aid potential site owners in their decision making, here are some things you should be aware of: Cheap web designers are not necessarily the best; it is common practice for unscrupulous web design businesses to farm out their projects to students in 3rd world countries.

The results inevitably are poorly constructed website that may look good to the untrained eye; however the all-important coding that is the backbone of the site, this will generally be a total mess. The average web designer will charge £25 per hour; this is a good benchmark figure. Check out a designer’s portfolio, pay particular attention to: Who owns the sites; it will not be much of a portfolio if the designer himself owns these sites. How long have the sites been running? Speaks for itself, you want a designer who has a wealth of experience, not one straight from High School. How well are these sites ranked by the Search Engines? Email the site owners, and get their opinion. Find out if any SEO work will be included in the price, this is one of the main problems when it comes to using a cheap designer.

Let’s be honest there is no point having a good looking website, that attracts no visitors. Web designers fully understand what a site needs to be successful, however they hold back on the SEO work as they would like you to be a returning customer and of course pay more money. What SEO tools should you request from your designer? Plenty of enriched keyword content, containing anchor text. Meta tags that contain keywords specific to each relevant page, not just a huge list on the homepage. A method of adding unique content to your site, this could be by way of a blog, an article section or forum. Adding unique content to a site is one of the most overlooked aspects of SEO. A method of adding links to your site; this is done generally by adding a resource section or a directory. My own feelings on the current situation are, things will probably get worse for a few years, then it is hoped all web designers will be completely regulated or Google will take over the complete design business, this would not be a bad thing in my opinion.

I hope this small article has explained why in my opinion I believe the majority of web designers are, not worth a light. I am the site owner at www.businessservicesuk.com here we have our own in house designer, he charges £25 an hour, he constructs websites right the first time and combines this with all the optimisation tools a site owner requires. If there is a better designer out there, we have yet to find him/her. This is not an advert for his services, more an explanation that we would not have him aboard if he could not provide clients with a good all round package.
