When to Start On-Site Optimisation
I occasionally find time to browse through the business forum scene, whilst doing this I often see the words, 'I’ve just had a website built or re-vamped and now I’m looking to improve the Search Engine Optimisation functionality'. It’s a statement I’ve never understood as effective on-site optimisation needs to be incorporated during the design phase of a website. It’s very difficult to produce a well rounded search engine friendly site after the navigation and sub pages are in place.
If pages are based around poor keywords the site will not perform well in the organic listings. The optimum strategy is find out exactly where the demand is, then structure web pages accordingly. An example It’s unlikely a web page would attain first page status in the major search engines for the term ‘jewellery’, however it would be possible for less competitive longtails. Remember it’s impossible for a website to perform well if all the pages are based around terms people seldom submit. At Business Services UK we produce websites in a set manner, we take the two separate phases (design and optimisation) and we gel them together. Of course it means the design or re-vamp of a site takes a little longer, however when completed all our sites perform well within the major search engines.
If you’re planning a revamp or a website build, on-site optimisation should not be taken on retrospectively, especially if you’re keen for your site to perform well in search.
