Twitter Stuff

I make no bones about it; I dislike the vast majority of social media experts, mainly because they run a mile when you mention the word ‘validation’. These experts are all in a similar situation when you look at their account details
20,000 tweets, following 2,000 followers 1,000
To the naked eye these figures may seem impressive, they aren’t. As a social media star I would expect to see at least 50,000 (genuine) followers. I say genuine as you can buy fictitious followers.
Anyhow, here are my own thoughts on improving your visibility on Twitter?
Step 1.
Set up an auto responder so all your new followers receive a nice welcoming message, if you’re clever you can gear this towards your business, try and be subtle.
Step 2.
Automatically follow people who follow you, why not? The name of the game is visibility. If these new followers turn out to be spam merchants simply remove them at a later stage.
Details on setting up these features can be found here

Step 3.
Start a regime of following people who may be beneficial to your business, Twellow is a fantastic resource as it contains over 30 million profiles with a filtered list capability.

Step 4.
Set up an interesting profile, this can be done by utilising the tools provided by Twitter. Simply click on your profile name (top right), settings and then design. Have a play about its quiet interesting.
Step 5.
Possibly the most important, mix up the theme of your posts. Throw in some:
Factual information
Humour
Links
Self promotional
Helpful guidelines
News
Testimonials
etc
Do not go down the road of posting stereotypical information or regurgitating the same old posts day in day out.
Step 6.
If your website contains an article, news or blog section one that has RSS enabled you can automate posts to your twitter profile by setting up and modifying an account on twitterfeed

I will never profess to be an authority on social media as Google will always be my game. That said I have picked up some useful tips by running accounts for our clients.
The problem areas I see are 3 fold:
Visibility
Content
Open Doorways
Visibility – You can tweet till the cows come home, if no one sees these messages you are embarking on a campaign of pissing into a hurricane.
Content – Mix up your posts and interact will fellow Twits, as with most things, the more you put into a system the more you benefit.
Open Doorways – There’s no point having links and widgets on a corporate website inviting people to visit your Twitter account. You’re basically saying to your valuable visitors, if you would like to leave my site, please step through this open doorway. Social media is a way of attracting visitors, not losing them
Conclusion
Be smart, versatile and differentiate yourself from the pack. Following the herd seldom brings rewards.
