Spamming Social Networks
Tactics applied by spammers could eventually lead to the demise of the major social networking websites. Social networks were founded with the aim of displaying and promoting top quality content across their platforms. However with most successful online ventures you will always find they attract a group of people who look to manipulate any system for their own benefit, usually at the cost of genuine hard working entrepreneurs.
As the major social networks have grown it has become more desirable to have a post listed on their homepage, you would like to think the quality of any article would dictate if a post was considered worthy of a homepage submission, you would be sadly wrong. What's happening is, certain webmasters are building a huge list of friends, upon the release of their articles, these people are able to generate 1000's of votes within a few short hours. These votes are enough to propel their article, regardless of quality to the high scoring homepage. I often wonder how articles on 'The Dampness of my Bedsit' could be viewed worthy of a homepage submission on any website.
Many people are becoming aware of these tactics and realise no matter how hard they try to produce quality work it will never be viewed favourably. I guess it is up to the owners of the networking sites to produce a fairer system. EBay recently made drastic changes to their feedback system which now prevents sellers leaving negative feedback on buyers who leave them a black mark, a huge step forward in their system.
