Snooze You Loose (RSS)
A few weeks ago I had a chat with a client on the subject of sourcing information for articles, the conversation expanded slightly to discuss keeping up to date with relevant information from his specific sector. To answer the question I explained how I operate.
Obviously there’s a lot of information published on the subject of online marketing, if I’m honest too much. When contemplating writing about a new development, wanting to monitor my competitors or carry general research, I trawl through my RSS feeds.
Around 2 years ago I started subscribing to RSS feeds, obviously relevant to the sector I work in, as time went by I removed the poor quality ones, I’m now down to 6. I have these feeds linked directly to my Outlook account, basically the information is delivered directly to my computer.
Setting up RSS feeds is a simple process, visit a site of interest, if they have a feed it should be displayed on their homepage or within the news section. Once the feed is located, copy the URL.
The next step is to go to your Outlook account, click Tools/Account Settings/RSS Feeds/New, then drop in the URL. Obviously repeat the process for each individual site.
Keeping up to speed on the developments of your sector is vital for a business, the term ‘snooze you lose’ is an apt one. I’m all for making the most of technology, I certainly don’t have the time to trawl through 100’s of web pages on a daily basis.
Another way of keeping up to date on general events is to set up email alerts on Google News, however please note, the information posted here is generally produced by journalists.
