Searchwiki and SEO
The SEO industry is currently up in arms due to the introduction of Google’s Searchwiki toolbar, a new function introduced that allows registered members to bookmark their favourite websites. Of course the introduction of anything new at Google gets people instantly agitated, especially as millions of businesses rely solely on its revenue stream.
So what affect will Searchwiki have for online businesses? In terms of Google’s search engine ranking , none , Matt has already stated this via Twitter channel http://twitter.com/mattcutts/status/1022109781 People should however be aware of the direction Google are taking, to look at this we need to go back to early last year
a. The introduction of the duplicate content penalty
b. Paid directories took a hit with Google actively taking action against sites who sold links based around page ranking
c. Sites that keyword spammed found themselves moving down the rankings instead of up
d. The devaluation of anchor text
e. Google distant itself from DMOZ
We have known for some time that Google would prefer websites to be based around good quality content, working towards pleasing a sites visitor not the search engines. If a site wants to rank highly today it needs to be based around a. Good quality content that is added to on a regular basis b. Build good quality inbound links in a natural manner c. Having a website constructed in a manner that follows Google’s webmaster guidelines If people follow these principles they will not go far wrong
