Reverse Optimisation
Earlier today I had an interesting conversation with my cousin Scott. He informed me he had read an article in The Times that highlighted the services of companies that are working hard to get web pages to rank at the back of search engine listings. Initially I was confused as to the nature of this service, surely everyone wants their pages to rank as high as possible.
There’s a popular saying in business, all publicity is good publicity, this is not the case in all instances. Imagine a sinario where a Zoo has been reported for mistreating their animals. Obviously the owners of the Zoo are not keen for this story to be highlighted within search. So they simply hire a reverse optimisation company, these people have the ability to ‘Google Bomb’ certain keywords, this results in the offending articles being pushed down the organic listings, how novel.
The more I think about it the more I can see this kind of service becoming more popular in the future, mind you it will not be a road my company will be going down, we have enough on getting our clients sites to the top of Google.
So if you ever hear anyone saying their job is to get web pages to the back of the index, you now realise they are not pulling your leg, although I’m unsure about the ethics of Google bombing.
