QR Codes are Growing in Popularity

QR Codes (quick response codes) have become a useful marketing tool for website owners. The code allow visitors with a camera fitted mobile device combined with reader software to upload and store useful information.

QR codes were primarily used in Japan, however over the past few years their popularity has moved to the global marketplace. Two dimensional QR codes are more beneficial than standard barcodes as they store more data, this includes:

• Images
• Video clips
• URL’s
• Geo-specific information
• Text

It’s believed that Google will soon have the ability to read and index QR codes, once this happens I expect there to be a mad rush to implement code within corporate websites.

Ecommerce sites are already adding QR codes to their product lines, if they aid conversion it must be viewed as a positive step.

The downside to QR codes is a person needs a camera built into their mobile phone as well as reader software. They certainly make no sense to the naked eye.

QR codes may be seen as a fad or a marketing gimmick that holds a short lifespan, I disagree and feel within a few years billboards, magazines, television, websites and the side of lorries will be filled with the 2 dimensional codes. To be successful in business today we need to pamper to the needs of our target audience. Of course people often become bored of continually adapting their marketing strategy to accommodate the latest technological advancements but these are the times we live in. We either keep up or we drop behind, it’s as simple as that.

So next time you see one of these strange black shapes you know what they are, basically a data storage image.
