Online Support and Training
Last weekend was a stark reminder how poor the government are at providing support to the small business operator.
As a treat for our children we decided to take them to Bridlington for the weekend, the thinking was the kids would enjoy the experience of staying in a traditional British seaside resort whilst residing in a Guest House. Due to the fact we have spent most of our time living in mainland Europe this would be a first for our family.
After checking out Trip Advisor we decided on The Malvern Guest House as it turned out it was a fantastic choice, both Terry and Susan, the proprietors, were welcoming and the perfect hosts. Whilst on vacation I was asked by Susan as to the nature of my work, I informed her I provided online marketing support to British businesses. We went on to have many discussions about her online visibility and marketing strategies.
Of course people like Terry and Susan are not Internet whiz kids, they come from an era where businesses thrived from providing a fantastic service and lived off the back of positive recommendations, of course this strategy is now outdated with the Internet becoming an integral part of everyday life. I did my best to pass on some helpful advice and informed the pair if they needed any assistance in the future to drop me an email. It was much later that I realised there must be tons of people like Terry and Susan, couples who are doing what the government advocate, setting up a self employed business, one that contributes in terms of raising employment opportunities and of course taxation payments. What the government are not doing is offering these kind of people the long term support and training they require.
How on earth would Terry and Susan know the difference between a good or bad web designer or marketer, the answer is they wouldn't.
I hope over the next few years steps are taken to improve the support offered to the small business owner at present the situation is wholly unacceptable.
