Internet on the TV

Last May we witnessed the birth of Google TV, back then the idea was to bring the Internet experience to our living rooms via television. The venture which ties together Logitech and Sony was intended to be a ground breaking innovation, so far it would be fair to say it’s been a flop. Apple had the same problem, their TV application promised so much but in the end it failed to deliver. The concept of bringing the Internet to our living rooms via the TV screen is a good one, the problem areas are: Equipment – The TV needs to be connected to a network, this can be achieved from • An internal or plug in network device

• A set top box

• An Ethernet cable

The next issue is the operating device, these are external keyboards or TV remote controls. As you can see it’s not straight forward, the next issue is the quality of picture and length of video clips. I have the ability to connect our home TV to the net via a plug in usb networking device, the problem I found was the image quality and sound were poor and length of clips on You Tube are too short, all this made for a poor experience. It’s of no surprise we no longer watch it.

This year You tube plan to spend $100 million on revamping their platform, it will be interesting to see what they come up with. Eventually an organisation will develop a system that allows households to use the Internet on our TV screens, one that delivers an enjoyable experience. High levels of advertising revenue would be gained from this medium, so it really is a worthwhile pursuit. So whilst Apple and Google have tried and failed their efforts should still be applauded.
