Google Planning Patent Move
With so much litigation surrounding the subject of patents Google have been forced into action. It’s been reported that search engine giant Google have placed a $900,000 bid for the patent portfolio of now bankrupt Nortel Networks. If Google are successful in the bankruptcy auction they will hold a treasure trove of patents one that would certainly be useful in the future. Jonathan Bellwood the owner of inventory management software giant Peoplevox commented, “Patent litigation is proving to be a nightmare for technological based companies who are keen to bring exciting innovations to the marketplace”
In recent times there has been a dramatic rise in competition based patent claims, basically a business tying up their competitors in complicated red tape issues all with the aim of stunting their growth. Even if these claims are unsuccessful they certainly produce a time delay. It will be interesting to see if the Monopolies Commission throw a spanner in the works, it is believed they are looking closely at each step Google take. Some would see this as unfair, without organisations like Google online technological enhancements would suffer.
I for one hope Google win Nortel’s auction and go on to bring more exciting products and systems in the future, however I expect the final price to be close to $3million.
