Effective Planning

A common problem facing Internet start-ups is high levels of competition. This means it’s unlikely a website will have instant visibility in search engines, added to this the cost of Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising will be high. Unless careful planning is undertaken at the development stage of these websites they are often left redundant in terms of lead generation tools. The owners are left to use other means of attracting attention to their business, this could be from:

• Trade shows • Forums

• Networking Groups

• Social Media

• Article distribution

• Press releases

• Magazines

• Newspapers

• Leaflet Drops

The simple truth is this; if a website is constructed correctly it should be the best medium for advertising a business, other formats are either expensive, not time efficient or they simply don’t work. There’s a rule of thumb to follow when operating in a competitive sector, start small and build slowly. What do I mean by this? A start-up can target geo-specific keywords or uncompetitive longtails, then as the site becomes stronger re-focus the pages to target semi competitive terms. Eventually when the site is strong enough it can effectively target competitive keywords.

A conservative estimate to achieve the goal of ranking highly for competitive terms is around 5 years. Remember it’s better to have a small share of the market than no share at all. Of course whilst this process development is in operation a business can also try the things listed above. Rome was not built in a day, effective planning is the key to success in the online sphere. That mixed with hard work and an element of good fortune.
