Business Studies and Students
Many educational institutions, such as colleges and universities, would argue that ‘Business Studies’ is relevant in society today to provide a dynamic and all-rounded education. For students, learning the principles of business studies is a lot more than the formulas for working out a mathematical equation or revising the various methods a business would use to motivate its workforce. More commonly than not, students relate business studies to their own lives in order to understand what they are taught.
According to statistics published by the University of Exeter in 2007 over 61% of students are in term time employment. Business studies students in particular are able to relate to the facts that are taught in the classroom, practical side of the study, which in this case is working. Students can relate to the methods about how employees are motivated, how communication is effective in a business and how information technology is important in business today. They are also able to see directly how the different departments of a business actually work, rather than simply revising them over and over. Learning out of a textbook can provide a good knowledge base, but does it actually enhance it?
Many call centres in the UK for example, are enticing students out of their studies and offering part-time work for reasonable amounts of money. These centres demonstrate typical business behaviour that would be described in a textbook owned by an A-Level student. They display their mission statement high on a plaque on the wall for the entire workforce to note and have a wide hierarchical structure that allows wide span of communication. They also have various training and motivational techniques that are used in order to increase the efficiency of the staff. If a student witnesses this through earning money, then surely encouraging them to have part-time work is beneficial for the long term.
The most important lesson to be made from this is that practical learning is much more advantageous than textbook learning, although it does depend on the student. As some students prefer to read in order to absorb the methods, practical people such as engineers, prefer to learn practically. However, giving students the opportunity to incorporate the things they learn in the classroom into the experience they gain in the workplace, provides examples necessary to achieve a decent grade in an exam.
