Bounce Rate Google Analytics

A recent topic discussed on Webpronews has been based around the term 'bounce rates', this is a term used by Google in their analytic programme. For people who are not familiar with this term, I will explain. A visitor is said to 'bounce' if they only visit one page of a website and then leave, however if that same person comes back later and looks at the site again, this is not a bounce. Bounce rates are therefore an important statistic, we would like people to visit our website, find our sites interesting and take time to look around.

People who find a website interesting are more likely to convert to being a customer, to that end bounce rates and conversion ratios are closely related. So how can we improve our bounce rate? It is obviously difficult to understand what each visitor wants to see when they visit our websites, however there are a few guidelines that if followed should improve your bounce rate percentage:

1. Make sure your website loads quickly, there is nothing more irritating than pages that take forever to load

2. Make sure your website is targeting the correct geographical location, this can be done by hosting your website in the country you are targeting and selecting the right geographical location in Google's Webmaster Tools.

3. Make your site content interesting, far too often sites go over the top with the sales pitch mentality

4. List genuine testimonials on various pages of your website

5. Consider the colour of your website, many people find reading white text on a black background difficult.

6. Offer special offers and incentives throughout the site

7. Limit the amount of Adsense on your website as it can give the wrong impression to visitors, added to that you are tempting visitors away from your site for a payment of what, 10p.

8. Make sure the site is easy to navigate and user friendly.

All of these issues are common sense, however the main problem is we tend to set our websites up to suit our own eye, not our visitors.

By following our guidelines I am sure you will start to see your bounce rates improve and with it your sites conversion ratio
