Affiliate Based Websites
Google are now coming good on their pledge to clean up their search engine results. One of the major areas to be tackled was the vast amount of affiliate based websites that plagued the Internet.
For those that don’t know what I mean by affiliate websites, these are sites that appear to offer something but masked it’s true identity.
An example
A well know bank want to push their business insurance policies, to boost sales they offer attractive affiliation rates. Basically they want to tempt website owners to display their products, in return a commission payment is made.
The problem arose when website owners started masking the true nature of these enquiries. This phenomenon grew into a monster, in a way it was fed by website owners who were just looking for easy money. When this starts becoming a reality it can grow very quickly.
Google set about tackling this problem by developing software that could identify affiliate based code. Once this was done it was just a matter of reducing these pages from their vast index.
Of course it’s not the end of the game, people will continue to develop ways of masking their intentions but it would be true to say the amount of affiliate based systems we see is less than it once was. This can only be a good thing for the future of the web. If people want household insurance from a leading supplier it’s not difficult to source. No one should be duped into purchasing something that’s unethical. I guess this was always the danger as the Internet is an unregulated medium.
